Hemlata Yadav, Head Teacher

Satya Bharti School, Mohanpur, Haryana

Hemlata belongs to a lower middle class village in a village in Haryana. One of three siblings, Hemlata was brought up in a joint family, often neglected because of the financial condition of the family. When Hemlata finished her school leaving examinations, she decided she would study further and go to college. However, her decision was disapproved of by her family members and her engagement was fixed at the age of 16 years. However, she fought hard and managed to pass her graduation and was the only girl to have graduated from college in her entire village.

Soon after she was married off. After her marriage Hemlata realized that her husband had not passed college as he had claimed and had left studies in his first year of graduation. As a result he was now unemployed and often mixed with bad company in the village. Hemlata fought hard again against her in-laws and managed to complete her B.Ed and MA with utmost difficulty. She also realized that she would have to start working soon to be able to meet the financial requirements of the house.

It was at this time that a vacancy for the Satya Bharti School was announced in the village. Hemlata applied for the post and got selected as a teacher. However, there was major opposition from her inlaws and she often got abused because of her decision to work. Her husband even came to the school and abused her in front of all the students and teachers. It was at this time that Hemlata’s colleagues stood by her and helped her fight and retain her job at the school.  Hemlata worked hard and was soon selected as Head Teacher of the school. She also performed exceptionally well during the HT Performance Assessment Tests conducted by Bharti Foundation. For Hemlata, this is just the beginning. Her story is an inspiration for many more girls in her village.
