| | Components of Satya Bharti School Program Curriculum | A. Scholastic Skills Scholastic skills can broadly be described as the development of cognitive skills in children through in-class activities.
1. Common Holistic Curriculum Working in rural pockets of the country, the learning level of children attending the Satya Bharti Schools has been a constant challenge for the program. Keeping this in mind, the school curriculum has been designed to not only develop children academically but also to help them gain conceptual clarity.
The Common Curriculum followed at the Satya Bharti Schools encompasses both indoor and outdoor learning projects and activities, ensuring that children have exposure to a wider perspective of learning.
Following a graded learning trajectory, the primary curriculum encourages each child to explore, experience and learn and also allows the teacher to engage all children in effective learning. Remedial lessons are in-built into a regular school day to help bridge learning gaps in children.
2. Annual School Calendar The Annual School Calendar is a day-wise school plan developed to ensure that all schools follow an almost similar calendar with region-specific requirements built into it. It maps the academic year with various activities, campaigns, events, examinations, school holidays etc. To support the values and life-skills component of the school curriculum, the Annual School Calendar indicates six themes with each theme running for a period of two months. In addition to Themes, each month is designated with a value, e.g. discipline, truth, gratitude, sensitivity to environment, strength of conviction, mutual respect, compassion, democracy, cleanliness and commitment.
3. Innovative Teaching Learning Material (TLM) To create exciting and easy learning opportunities for our students, innovative ‘Teaching Learning Materials’ (TLM) are used in all Satya Bharti Schools. These TLMs support all-round development of children and are specifically developed according to relevance, context, durability, usefulness and the levels of engagement they generate for students.
TLMs are either procured by Bharti Foundation or created in-house. At times, teachers also involve children in making these, thereby creating authentic TLMs which the children can connect with easily.
Kinds of TLMs used at Satya Bharti Schools: | Visual Aids: Story books and activity books in different languages which are relevant, pictorial, interesting and easy to read, charts, flash cards, PEC cards etc. Every school also has a Jodogyan mathematics learning kit. | | Audio/Audio-Visual Aids – Technology aided like Interactive Audio Instruction Program and Multimedia Content mapped with the curriculum. | | Kinesthetic Aids - Toys – Handpicked educational toys and manipulatives as well as sports kit. | B. Co-Scholastic Skills Apart from academics, the Satya Bharti Schools focus equally on the development of personal, social, physical and emotional skills of children. Children are introduced to life skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, lateral thinking and problem solving.
1. Physical Education in Curriculum (PEC) Apart from academics, the Satya Bharti Schools focus equally on the development of personal, social, physical and emotional skills of children. Children are introduced to life skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, lateral thinking and problem solving.
2. Community Outreach Programs Community Outreach Programs have been incorporated into the Satya Bharti School curriculum to help students learn to interact and connect with their own surroundings.
a. Community Volunteering Community participation serves as the driving force at the grassroots level and in-built interventions seek to bind them closely with our schools. During the annual Community Volunteering Week, the schools are handed over to the community for a fortnight for them to hold classes with children. Ranging from folk lore, music, local vocations and cultural activities, community members acquaint children with things particular to their region. In 2011, approximately 1300 community members held classes for more than 31,000 of our students. This stems from the need to connect the children with the communities to which they belong.
b. Community Campaigns The Satya Bharti School Program aims to develop its students as the agents of positive transformation in the society. The annual Community Development Campaign form an intrinsic part of the curriculum that provides the apt platform for students to understand and interact with the community. These campaigns are student initiatives to fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, child labor, illiteracy, substance abuse, etc in their villages and bring about a change in the mindset of community-members. One of the greatest achievements has been the prevention of 16 child marriages in Jodhpur because of a Campaign on Child Marriage by our students.
C. Co-curricular Activities The Satya Bharti School teaching philosophy ensures that students are engaged in activities that create ample opportunities to explore their potential as a human being and a leader.
1. Bal Sabhas Bal Sabhas are special assemblies conducted every third Saturday in the Satya Bharti Schools. Students are encouraged to speak about the designated ‘value of the month’ and in the process, they gain meaningful information and become more confident in speaking their minds. Community members are also invited to address the students at the Bal Sabhas at regular intervals.
2. Life Skills Classes The Life Skills classes aim to generate awareness in children about issues affecting their daily lives. Discussion on topics like healthy eating, disease prevention, environmental health, growth and development is the essence of these sessions.
3. House Activities The Satya Bharti Schools have adopted the “House” system for grouping children and facilitating interaction among children of all ages. Each school has three “Houses” (Shakti- Strength, Shanti- Peace and Vaibhav- Prosperity). Activities and competitions are organized among “Houses” to provide opportunities to showcase talent. Working hard to outperform the other Houses, students learn to work as teams and develop a spirit of healthy competition.
4. Participation in External Competitions The Satya Bharti Schools encourage students to participate in external events to provide them exposure and an opportunity to meet people beyond their immediate surroundings of the school and community. Competing against students from other schools, in academic and extra curricular activities exposes our students to the joys of healthy competition, pride in their schools and fosters hard work and talent.
5. Rang Tarang The Rang Tarang competition was conceptualized to recognize the creative skills of children and instill in them the love for art. It is an annual festival across the Satya Bharti Schools wherein children showcase their varied talents, like poetry, song and dance.
6. Sports Day Sports Day is exclusively marked in the School Calendar and is held across all schools developing competitive and cognitive skills in children. Beginning at the school-level, winners of the former go on to participate at the cluster and district levels.
7. Celebration of Important Days The spirit of nationalism and brotherhood is celebrated through various school events on Republic Day and Independence Day. Community members are also invited to partake in these celebrations. Student achievers and specially girl students are felicitated on the occasion in the presence of the community.
Teacher’s Day and Children’s Day are also celebrated in the schools. Besides these, important national and international days like the World Environment Day, International Day for the Elderly, World Disability Day are also highlighted in the morning assemblies and students are informed about the origin and importance of these days.
8. Field Trips Students of Satya Bharti Schools are taken on excursion trips to nearby towns and cities. Such trips complement and promote quality education and social skills development in a non-school setting apart from being a fun-filled experience. The visits are planned keeping in view the age-appropriate learning objectives.
9. Medical Camps The Satya Bharti Schools often organize health camps in association with local medical institutes and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) for the children attending the schools. Besides routine heath checkup, treatment of malnourished children, awareness on healthcare and hygiene and treatment of anemia are the highlights of these health camps.
